Choosing a wedding photographer is no easy business, as you have to look at your wedding photographs for the rest of your lives! Here's some top-notch advice from Sunderland wedding photographer Michael Hope Photography…

LOOK AT THEIR REPUTATION
"There are many, many points to look for when considering, and booking a wedding photographer. Reputation and experience are a couple of the main points to consider. I have covered 1,200-1,300 weddings over the last 32 years, and can handle any situation put in front of me on the wedding day, simply because there really isn't anything I haven't experienced before. Someone who is new to weddings may not be as confident in certain situations. For example, if you have nice weather, and a nice location to work with, most photographers will produce good images, but throw into that equation, terrible weather, and a not so good wedding venue if the weather is bad, and this is where the experienced, creative photographers excel and leave the inexperienced wedding photographer behind!"

HAVE THEY GOT INSURANCE & QUALIFICATIONS?
"Beyond a photographer's photographic style and price range, other things to consider which are also important, which most people don't think of, is does the photographer or studio carry full public liability insurance and indemnity insurance? Unfortunately, a lot of photographers don't carry this insurance. Is the photographer a member of a nationally recognised photographic organisation, which not only have strict entry levels and degrees of photographic excellence to become a member, but you also must be a full-time photographer? I have been a fully qualified member of one of the largest and most prestigious photographic bodies in the UK since 1992, the Master Photographers Association. Has the photographer won any awards to show he attains a degree of excellence in the wedding photography industry? I have personally won well over 120 national and regional awards over the years, which are judged by some of the biggest names in the photographic industry."

WHAT ARE THEIR ADD-ONS LIKE?
"The quality, and value for money for the wedding albums and products a certain photographer offers is also another important point to consider. There are many mass-produced wedding albums and products out there, but I personally use albums and products that are totally handmade, for that extra level of craftsmanship, and quality in a product that will last many, many years after the wedding day is over."

AND FINALLY…
"All in all, choosing your perfect photographer for your big day is certainly not something to take lightly, and if you follow most of the guidelines above, you won't go to wrong."
