Wedding and special events planner Louise McMaster believes it's the desire to avoid family drama and save on costs that's driving the trend.

"Covid changed the way we think about weddings, and even though normality has resumed, people's eyes were opened to the romance of a small affair," she says. "I've never seen this level of elopement weddings – it's definitely a big trend of the summer."
