North East wedding expert shares top advice for when it comes to fitting into your dream gown

Q: I’ve lost weight for our spring wedding but I now need alterations as my dress is far too big. What can I do to sort the situation?

Once your weight has stabilised, don’t delay in having your wedding dress re-fitted. The process could take a little time as you may need to book several fittings, and your seamstress may have other clients to work around.

When going for alterations, you'll need to have the underwear you intend to use, and your shoes, or at least shoes of the correct height, as both items make a difference to your posture. It's a good idea to send photographs to your seamstress to indicate what to expect so that she can be planning possible ways to tackle problems before your fitting.

Where the fullness will be taken from your dress is dependent on its style, in particular, whether you have lost much of your bust. Shaped cups may no longer fit or be in the correct position! Bodices with a lace-up back may now have a reduced V insert, so will still need something taken off the side seams to retain the appearance of a laced back. However, this can be the easiest style option for a bride whose weight is likely to fluctuate right up to their big day. The most difficult styles to accommodate weight loss can be low-backed, soft construction, figure-skimming, lacey boho or beaded styles.

One of my customers Becky Bass commented on my work saying: "Norma did a fabulous job altering my bridal dress. I was unwell in the run-up to my big day and lost weight, she squeezed my appointments in and made sure my dress fitted and I was happy! Thank you for going above and beyond and for providing the best service!"
