What's it like snapping brides and grooms at their wedding? We caught up with County Durham-based photographer Scott Carney to talk favourite images – and why you should book him for your special day…

Where was this picture taken?
"This picture was taken at Christ Church, Great Ayton just after the ceremony. The couple are from Great Ayton but now live in London. They have been together since they were teenagers and chose to come back to their home town to get married."

Why do you love the image?
"Immy and Phil had plenty of family touches at the wedding as Phil's dad is a vicar and officiated the wedding. Phil's brother played guitar for the first dance before Phil joined in – and actually played in the band at his own wedding! The couple were the nicest, most relaxed people which fits my style perfectly."

What's your photographic style?
"I always photograph weddings in a documentary-style and I look for emotion and moments. This image just makes me feel happy. The confetti and wedding guests tell a story but the main thing that makes this wedding photo stand out for me is the expression of the bride and groom. It's that smile from Immy – and Phil looking at Immy in a way that only couples do after getting married."

Why book you?
"My style is documentary – I tell the story of the day and nothing is posed or forced, making me perfect for couples who want to feel relaxed and enjoy their time with their friends and family. I photograph all day, too – the wedding is much more than just the ceremony until the first dance, so I cover much more. I usually attract couples who hate posing and want a relaxed day and look for photos of the emotional, funny and interesting things that always happen at weddings."

Any advice for couples still searching for their perfect photographer?
"Ensure you love your wedding photographer's work – but also the photographer themselves! With so many styles available it's easy to get confused. Look through a number of full weddings and speak to them, at least online if not in person. After all they will be with you all day on one of the most intimate days of your life!"
