July/August 2019

This may be the July/August issue, but at the time of writing, I’m staring out at a seriously dark and moody sky. The rain’s lashing down, and the wind’s threatening to uplift my sons’ trampoline. I will not turn the heating on!

This mid-June storm just goes to show that you can’t predict the weather – and even more so when you live in the North East! Summer may be here, but that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed blue skies on your big day – so make sure you have a back-up in place if you’re tying the knot outside. Our garden venues spread, starting on page 23, showcases some stunning grounds where you can say “I do,” but it’s good to know they’ve equally breathtaking indoor spaces should the heavens decide to open.

Elsewhere this issue, I’ve been busy researching the very best North East suppliers you need for your wedding day. There’s wedding stationery trends and invitation etiquette advice on page 49, some stunning wedding jewellery over on page 53 and there’s the latest news for brides and grooms over on page nine. All this plus the chance to win personalised wedding glasses and your wedding hair over on page 13 – and a dream honeymoon to Abu Dhabi, on p101!

Enjoy planning the best day of your lives…

Newcastle Castle

Newcastle Castle is one of the UK’s finest surviving examples of a Norman stone keep. Built in 1178, the sandstone building, which has been altered several times, sits on a steep-sided promontory overlooking the River Tyne. The building is, by nature, rustic, rugged and imposing. Imagine walking through the ceremonial doors into the atmospheric Great Hall, with its 43ft-high arched ceiling, centrepiece fireplace and dominating windows.

Newcastle Castle consists of the Castle Keep and The Black Gate, a 13th-century gatehouse, which houses the licensed Harbottle Suite, offering civil ceremonies for 60 guests. The Norman Chapel on the ground floor provides the most beautiful space for a ceremony of your choosing for you and 40 guests, while on the second floor is the magnificent Great Hall, where you can host a blessing in front of up to 60. For your reception, you then have a variety of spaces to choose from. Wedding breakfasts providing seated dining options take place in the Great Hall for up to 60 guests, and you can enjoy a more intimate dinner for up to 40 in the Goal. Evening receptions or an alternative wedding breakfast can also be enjoyed throughout the Castle Keep for up to 80 of your guests.
