Having your wedding hair consultation and keen to chat about your upcoming honeymoon plans to your stylist? We'd wait a couple of months to catch up with The Junkyard Creative's Rachelle Summerson-Wright, as she's off to the Philippines to teach hairdressing!
Newcastle-based Rachelle has been chosen by global haircare brand, Schwarzkopf Professional to join their 2019 charity initiative, Shaping Futures, supported by the Fritz Henkel Stiftung.
Rachelle who is the Senior Stylist and Assistant Manager at The Junkyard Creative, will join seven other UK hairdressers as they travel to the Philippines in April as part of the Shaping Futures team, headed by UK Shaping Futures' Ambassador, Janet Maitland.
The group will spend a total of six weeks teaching the young people the essentials of hairdressing; from cutting and colouring through to styling. Each pair of volunteers will spend two weeks teaching, before handing over to the next. Following the six-week course (15th April – 24th May), the students will be offered further training or employment opportunities with local salon group, David's Salons.
Commenting on the opportunity, Rachelle said: "After working with Shaping Futures in India I was overwhelmed to have the opportunity to go to the Philippines. The experience last time was life changing for not just the young adults but for me to, it was humbling and inspiring. I'm so excited to be a part of this amazing charity again and help change the future of these venerable youths!"
Shaping Futures has been running since 2009, and this year marks its 10th Anniversary. In that time UK volunteers have helped over 300 young people learn the skills of hairdressing.
This is the second time the UK team has visited the Philippines, following many successful years partnering with SOS Children's Villages in India. Every young person who takes part in Shaping Futures has experienced trauma and poverty; but thanks to this initiative they are given the skills to build a new, safe life for themselves.
Kay Brady, National PPS Manager UK & IRE for Schwarzkopf Professional, said “It's because of the passion, dedication and spirit of people like Rachelle that we are able to run Shaping Futures, and offer young people a chance of a new life.
“This programme is incredibly important and over the past ten years, we've helped hundreds of youngsters from the SOS Children's Villages fulfil their dreams and aspirations. We are incredibly proud of all the people involved in the initiative, but especially the young people who fight every day to create their own futures; they are inspirations to us all.”
Each volunteer has been asked to fundraise around £1500 for the SOS Children's Villages charity and the additional money needed to cover their expenses.
