We caught up with some of the best wedding cake makers in the North East and asked them: "what's the best wedding cake you've ever made?"
CAKES BY DENISE
Run by Denise Howarth
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “A bake I designed for my sister's wedding. She wanted a rustic/woodland theme to represent them both and incorporate elements of family members, both present and departed. I've never felt so proud!”
Run by Clare Hayward
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “A four-tier creation that I was given free rein on. One tier was full of 2D roses, with stencilling, pearl borders and flowers to match the bride's theme.”
FAB CAKES NEWCASTLE
Run by Fathima Faiz
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “A 21-tier castle wedding cake – it was my first wedding cake of 2019 and my largest and tallest bake so far! It was so challenging as the bottom tier was 24 inches, but I loved creating it.”

FONDANT & APRON STRINGS
Run by Lee Majhen-Todd
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “It's difficult for me to choose a favourite! We don't design our wedding cakes; our couples do; sending in themes, picture references and personal thoughts they might like to include. I love them all!”
FOR GOODNESS CAKE NORTH EAST
Run by Carrie Wright
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “A tree stump cake that I created for a couple who were having a barn wedding and wanted something quirky and unique. I had a mould cast from real tree bark and the end result was amazing.”

GABRIELLA GRACE CAKES
Run by Gabriella Grace Elliott
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “I created a cake in November that had a Game of Thrones theme. I used a marbled green scale effect to mimic dragon scales with dark 'wild style' foliage and simple blooms.”
Run by Gary Nugent
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “It's at the design stage as it's not scheduled until next year. It will feature three industrialised cement textured stacked blocks, with a dark to light emerald green colour palette, along with shades of dusty pinks with silver and white.”
Run by Sarah-Jane Smith
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “The best is scheduled for later this year. I get to marry two passions together, Marvel comics and wedding cakes, so I'm very excited for this. It will also include a little fantasy with a hidden panel of characters.”
IVORY CAKE COMPANY
Run by Patricia Egen
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “My favourite was my tallest creation – six tiers with an additional 40 individual sphere cakes that surrounded the main cake. I loved the challenge; it was so tall and striking, and the sphere cakes were fun to make.”
MRS BOU CAKE
Where Chester Le Street
Run by Ashley Harkness
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “My best friend's wedding bake. They had been together since they were 15 and got married after 14 years of being together. It wasn't the most elaborate design, but it was definitely the most sentimental and significant.”
NORTHUMBERLAND CHEESE COMPANY
Run by Charlie Pears-Wallace
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “We supply the cheese only, so we're always excited to see how people decorate them. I remember one customer used Lego figures as their cake toppers, which was a really nice effect.”
SADIE MAY CAKES
Run by Sharon Bimson
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “Any of my creations where I'm allowed to be the most creative – in particular anything involving hand-painting, delicate sugar flowers and muted pastel tones.”
Run by Ami Plant and Barbara Jackson
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “We love all our creations, but the cake which drives the most interest featured a cascade of sugar flowers in beautiful pastel shades.”
THE MASTER CAKESMITH
Run by Dawn Renahan
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “I've created so many beautiful cakes it's hard to choose, but I love dessert tables and cakes with lots of texture. I also especially love paper thin ruffles, and people always ask how they've been done.”
Run by Helen Edwards
What's the best wedding cake you've made? “I've made some fabulous wedding cakes, but if I had to choose my all-time favourite it would have to be the 'Angel's Wing' cake, a four-tier creation which literally fluttered in the breeze.”
